Oker-Online (english version)
This is the result of the quick idea of someone we do not know anymore who it was to use the powerplant dependence of the River Oker in the Harz Mountains to make the connection of river ground and current visible. More, we wanted to show some possible passages and present our loved home river to anyone interested.
About 2 kilometers of the Oker are interesting for white water kajakers. Some national competitions take place here, too.
The river flows from south of Altenau in the Harz Mountains to Celle / Gifhorn and meets the river Aller there. Between the villages of Altenau and Schulenberg the water is damed up for energy and drinking water puposes. Due to the unsteady operation of the power plant one cannot kajak at the white water part of the oker all day. Usually the water runs in the morning from monday to friday. The exact time for the next days is announced by an answering machine: Dial 05326/908300 (Germany).
The good thing about the power plant ist: We can show you the river with and without water! At the left you find many photos of the main spots of the Oker. Below the enlarged images you will find the button

Any directions like "right" or "left" refer to the main stream direction, of course.
One more thing:
Please use the parking places. Do not park at the roadside; carry your boat to your car. Like this it is much easier to get along with the locals and with the local police, too.
Of course anyone is kajaking at his own risk here. The company of the power plant can forbid kajaking at any time.
So please, do not try to sue them for damage, loss or injury. It would be without effect and lots of kajakers would be crying not to be allowed to do the Oker anymore...
Finally I want to remember that we all act fair and try to be friendly to nature, other kajakers and locals...ok?
